Quick answer
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that AI assistants, voice assistants and search features like featured snippets can find it, understand it and quote it as an answer. It builds on SEO with direct answers near the top, question-based headings, clear facts, structured data and pages that search and AI crawlers can access.
People increasingly get answers without clicking through ten blue links. They read a featured snippet, ask a voice assistant, or ask an AI tool such as ChatGPT or Perplexity. Answer engine optimisation is about making your content the answer those systems choose, and ideally the source they cite.
What counts as an answer engine?
- Search features such as featured snippets, People Also Ask and AI-generated overviews
- Voice assistants that read out a single answer
- AI chat and search tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude when they search the web
They all want the same thing: a clear, trustworthy answer they can extract quickly.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO gets your page found and ranked. AEO makes the answer on that page easy to lift. You still need both. An answer engine can't quote a page it can't crawl or doesn't trust.
Practical AEO checklist
1. Lead with the answer
Answer the main question in the first 40 to 60 words, in plain language, before you add context. Every guide on ToolsCaptain opens with a short "Quick answer" box for exactly this reason.
2. Use questions as headings
Headings like "How long does local SEO take?" match how people ask. Follow each with a direct one or two sentence answer, then the detail.
3. Make facts easy to extract
Use lists for steps, tables for comparisons and short paragraphs. Define terms clearly. Avoid burying the answer in a story.
4. Add structured data
Schema markup such as Article, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Organization tells machines what each part of a page is. Keep it accurate and matching what's visible on the page.
5. Show who wrote it and when
Visible authorship, an about page, contact details and a "last updated" date all support trust. Keep facts current, especially prices and product details.
6. Let the crawlers in
Check that your robots.txt doesn't block search engines or the AI crawlers you want to be visible to. Submit an XML sitemap to Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Bing's index matters because several AI tools draw on it.
7. Cover the follow-up questions
After answering the main question, answer the next three things someone would ask. A short FAQ section at the end of a page is a simple way to do this.
8. Be the original source
First-hand experience, original data, clear opinions and specific examples are what make a page worth citing. Rewriting what already ranks rarely earns a citation.
How do you measure AEO?
It's still imperfect. Practical signals include:
- Featured snippet and People Also Ask appearances, tracked with tools like Semrush
- Referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics
- Manually asking AI assistants your key questions and noting whether you're cited
- Impressions and clicks in Google Search Console
Where to start
Pick your ten most important pages. Add a direct answer at the top, turn headings into questions, add a short FAQ and check your structured data. Then do the same for every new page you publish. For the groundwork, read our keyword research guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
AEO is best thought of as part of SEO. Good SEO makes your pages discoverable and trustworthy. AEO focuses on presenting the answer itself clearly enough that a search feature or AI system can lift it and credit you.
Does AEO replace traditional SEO?
No. AI assistants and search features rely heavily on content that is already crawlable, indexed and trusted. Without solid SEO foundations, AEO tactics have little to work with.
What is GEO?
GEO, or generative engine optimisation, is a related term for optimising content to be cited by generative AI tools. In practice the advice overlaps heavily with AEO.
Does structured data help with AI answers?
Structured data helps search engines understand what a page is about and is used for some search features. It is not a guarantee of being quoted, but it removes ambiguity, which is never a bad thing.
